Daktarin (miconazole nitrate) is a family of broad-spectrum antifungal treatments used to eradicate fungal infections on the skin, nails, groin and mouth.

Daktarin products are available in a range of formulations designed to specifically target infections in certain areas. While there is some overlap, the products are not always interchangeable; do not use the oral gel to treat athletes foot, for example, or vice versa.

The gel is typically applied 3 to 4 times per day with a fingertip, directly on the affected areas. It should be left in place as long as possible. It will gradually be dissolved and be swallowed. Improvements are usually noticed quickly, within a day or two of starting treatment. Treatment should continue for 2 to 7 days after all symptoms are gone.

Daktarin Cream

The cream version of Daktarin may be used to treat a range of infections on the skin and nails:

• Ringworm
• Candidiasis
• Athlete's foot
• Groin infections
• Nail infections

The cream is typically applied twice per day for both skin and nails. Improvements should be noticed quickly, but it may take several days or weeks for an infection to completely clear up. Nail infections in particular tend to heal slowly and may take a few months of treatment. Treatment should continue for 10 days after all symptoms have disappeared.

Some patients may find the moisture in creams can cause additional problems in areas that already tend to be moist, such as the groin. Daktarin Powder may resolve this problem.

Daktarin Powder

The powder product is used for similar conditions as the cream, with the exception of nails. As mentioned above, the powder will help keep the application site dry. It can also be applied to broken skin, something that is not advisable with the cream.

The powder should be applied twice daily and may be sprinkled in shoes, clothing, or other material that comes into contact with infected areas. It should not be applied directly to mucous membranes, such as the rectum or vagina, as its drying properties may cause irritation.

Treatment should continue for 10 days days after symptoms are resolved.

Daktarin Tincture

The tincture form of the product is specifically designed to treat fungal nail infections. It is applied with a small brush, similar to nail polish, twice per day. The entire nail should be covered, as well as the skin surrounding it and, if possible, underneath the nail. Old medication should be thoroughly removed before applying the next dose.

Fungal nail infections are notoriously slow to heal; in most cases it takes a minimum of 2 months, and it may take several additional months. Toenail infections tend to heal slower than fingernails.
